Our Terms of Service outlining rights, obligations, acceptable use, and liability limitations.

By using JTranslate (the "Service"), or any services of JTranslate, you are agreeing to be bound by the following terms and conditions ("Terms of Service").

All use of the website, information, services, and content distributed through or in conjunction with or made available on the website is offered to you subject to your acceptance of these terms and our Privacy Policy.

JTranslate reserves the right to update and change the Terms of Service from time to time without notice. Any new features that augment or enhance the current Service, including the release of new tools and resources, shall be subject to the Terms of Service. Continued use of the Service after any such changes shall constitute your consent to such changes. You can review the most current version of the Terms of Service here.

Violation of any of the terms below may result in the termination of your Account. You agree to use the Service at your own risk.

Account Terms

You must provide accurate and complete registration information any time you register to use the Service.

You must sign up with your real email address. Signups from disposable email addresses, shared mailboxes, or any other fraudulent signups will be deleted.

Accounts created by automated methods are not permitted and will be removed.

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account and password. JTranslate cannot and will not be liable for any loss or damage from your failure to comply with this security obligation.

You are responsible for all content posted and activity that occurs under your account.

You may not use the Service for any illegal or unauthorized purpose. You must not, in the use of the Service, violate any laws in your jurisdiction (including but not limited to copyright laws).

Services and Data

JTranslate is a web-based SaaS application for translation and management of JSON files. Core functionality includes:

  • Uploading JSON files for translation
  • Creating and managing projects to organize translations
  • Performing AI-powered translations via the DeepL API
  • Managing translation history and snapshots through Quick Translations

Quick Translations and Translation Jobs

A Quick Translation is a translation process initiated in JTranslate. It can be started within a project to update target languages, or as a stand-alone Quick Translation. Each Quick Translation generates a translation job, which is a snapshot of the resulting translation at that point in time.

For example, over a week, you may perform multiple Quick Translations for a project. Each Quick Translation produces a corresponding translation job, preserving the source file and target files as they existed at that moment. Users can always access previous translation jobs to review or restore past translations, subject to them still being available (see File Storage and Retention below).

Projects

Projects organize your translation work, including all associated Quick Translations and translation jobs. Within a project, you can manage your target languages and track updates over time. Projects detect and highlight changes across target languages whenever you re-upload your source file, making it easy to see what needs updating. Deleted projects are archived for 7 days, after which all associated files are permanently removed unless restored via support.

File Storage and Retention

All uploaded source files and generated target files are securely stored in Google Cloud Storage. Translation job files are automatically deleted 90 days after creation. Deleted projects are archived for 7 days, after which all associated files are permanently removed. Database records of translation jobs persist beyond file deletion for internal auditing, but no files are accessible after deletion.

AI Translation Limitations

Translations are performed using DeepL AI, which may not always be perfect. JTranslate does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or suitability of translations for any purpose. Users are responsible for reviewing translations before deploying them in production.

Service Availability

JTranslate aims to provide continuous access but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. Temporary interruptions may occur for maintenance, updates, or technical issues.

Subscription & Translation Keys

Plans and Trial

JTranslate offers two main plans:

  • Free Plan: 425 translation keys per month
  • Professional Plan: 3,400 translation keys per month

All new users receive a 14-day Professional trial upon registration. During the trial:

  • You have access to Professional features
  • You are limited to 1 project
  • You receive 425 monthly translation keys, the same as the Free Plan

After 14 days, accounts automatically downgrade to the Free Plan unless otherwise upgraded.

Translation Keys Explained

A translation key represents a single key in your JSON that you wish to translate. Each key includes an allowance of 75 characters. Values longer than 75 characters do not automatically consume additional keys unless total character usage exceeds your allocation.

Example: You upload a JSON with 10 keys → allocation = 750 characters (10 × 75). If the combined length of all values is 700 characters, no extra keys are consumed, even if one value is 500 characters long.

Quick Translations consume translation keys according to this calculation. Each translation job uses the keys allocated at the time it is performed.

Additional Keys

Additional keys are for larger or one-off translation jobs and are purchased and accounted for separate to your monthly translation key allocation. Additional keys are only consumed after monthly keys are fully exhausted. Remaining additional keys carry over to the next month.

Key Usage and Restrictions

Translation keys are non-refundable once consumed, as each key represents actual usage of the DeepL API and incurs a real cost. Keys cannot be transferred between accounts or users. Users are responsible for monitoring their key usage and ensuring they have sufficient keys for translation jobs.

Plan Changes and Upgrades

Users may upgrade their account at any time to access additional monthly translation keys and features. Downgrades from Professional to Free occur automatically after the trial or if subscription payment lapses.

The 14-day Professional trial is limited to one per user or account. Abusing trial accounts (e.g., creating multiple accounts to extend trials) may result in suspension or termination.

Payment and Billing

All payments for subscriptions or additional translation keys are processed via Lemon Squeezy. You agree to provide valid payment information and authorize recurring charges for any subscription plan you select. Payment obligations are your responsibility, including any applicable taxes, fees, or currency conversion charges.

Subscriptions are billed on a monthly or annual basis, depending on the plan you select. You may switch between monthly and annual plans at any time.

  • Switching from monthly to annual: The new annual plan is billed immediately but will take effect at the end of your current monthly billing period.
  • Switching from annual to monthly: The new monthly plan will take effect at the end of your current annual billing period. No additional billing occurs until the annual period ends.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

You can cancel your subscription at any time from the account settings modal under the billing tab.

You will be able to use the JTranslate service until the end of the billing period. In the case of a yearly plan, you will be able to use your plan until the end of the billed year. In the case of the monthly plan, you will be able to use your plan until the end of the billed month.

If you cancel the Service before the end of your current billing period, your cancellation will take effect immediately and you will not be charged again. However, your requests will be served till your current billing period.

Non-refundable after use: Translation keys and subscription fees are non-refundable once consumed, as each translation key represents real-time usage of the DeepL API, which incurs a direct cost to JTranslate.

Exceptions: Refunds may be considered in cases of duplicate charges, billing errors, or technical issues preventing access to the Service. Requests for exceptions must be submitted via hello@jtranslate.dev and will be reviewed case-by-case.

Refunds will not be provided for payments older than 120 days.

For violation of these Terms, misuse of the Service, or behavior that poses a security, legal, or operational risk, JTranslate, in its sole discretion, has the right to suspend or terminate your account and refuse any and all current or future use of the Service. Such termination of the Service will result in the deactivation of your Account and your access to your Account. In the case of an account termination any active subscription will also be cancelled.

Prohibited Conduct

When using JTranslate, you agree not to engage in any of the following actions:

  • Using the Service for any unlawful, fraudulent, or malicious purpose
  • Uploading files containing viruses, malware, or harmful code
  • Attempting to exploit or bypass system security or safeguards
  • Circumventing translation key limits, including creating multiple accounts to extend free trials
  • Attempting to manipulate or abuse Quick Translations, translation jobs, or project data
  • Excessive automated requests or any activity that negatively impacts system performance
  • Reverse-engineering, decompiling, or attempting to extract source code from JTranslate
  • Using the Service to infringe the intellectual property rights of others
  • Accessing another user's account or project without explicit permission
  • Sharing your account credentials with others, except where explicitly allowed by JTranslate
  • Providing false or misleading information when creating an account or communicating with support

JTranslate reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate this section. Users remain liable for any damages resulting from prohibited conduct. Any prohibited conduct may also be reported to law enforcement where required by law.

Third-Party Services & Integrations

JTranslate integrates with several third-party services to provide functionality, including:

  • DeepL – AI-powered translations
  • Firebase – backend, authentication, storage, and functions
  • Sentry – error tracking and analytics
  • Lemon Squeezy – payment processing and subscription management
  • Mailjet – SMTP server

JTranslate shares only the data necessary with these third-party services to operate the Service. Users acknowledge that use of JTranslate may involve sending data to these third-party providers. Users are responsible for ensuring that any content uploaded complies with these providers' terms of service.

JTranslate is not responsible for the availability, functionality, or security of third-party services, or any errors, losses, or damages caused by third-party service interruptions or failures.

JTranslate may add, remove, or update third-party integrations at any time. Users will be notified if such changes significantly affect the Service or require updates to their usage practices.

Intellectual Property & Ownership

All intellectual property rights in JTranslate, including its software, interface, design, branding, logos, and underlying code, are owned by Outpost Software. These rights are protected by UK and international copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.

Users retain ownership of any content they upload to JTranslate, including JSON files, translation jobs, and project data. By using the Service, you grant JTranslate a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to process, store, and manage your content solely to provide the Service.

Users may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works from JTranslate's software or content outside the scope of using the Service. By creating an account, you are granted a limited, non-transferable, revocable license to use JTranslate in accordance with these Terms.

If you believe your intellectual property rights are being infringed through the Service, please contact hello@jtranslate.dev with sufficient detail to investigate the matter.

Limitation of Liability & Disclaimers

JTranslate is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. Outpost Software does not guarantee:

  • That the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or completely secure
  • The accuracy, reliability, or completeness of AI translations
  • That all features will function as expected at all times

All translations performed through Quick Translations or translation jobs use DeepL AI. JTranslate does not warrant the correctness, completeness, or suitability of translations for any purpose. Users are responsible for reviewing and validating translations before using them in production or public-facing applications.

While JTranslate implements technical safeguards for storage and backup, we cannot guarantee against accidental loss, deletion, corruption, or unauthorized access to files. Users are encouraged to maintain their own backups of important JSON files and translations.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Outpost Software, its affiliates, employees, or partners shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, loss of data, revenue, or profits, or any claims arising from your use, inability to use, or reliance on the Service.

The total liability of Outpost Software for any claim arising out of or related to JTranslate shall not exceed the amount you have paid for subscriptions or translation keys in the 12 months preceding the claim.

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Outpost Software from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses arising from your use of the Service, violation of these Terms, or infringement of any third-party rights.

Governing Law & Dispute Resolution

These Terms of Service, and any dispute arising from your use of JTranslate, are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United Kingdom.

Before initiating formal legal proceedings, users are encouraged to contact support at hello@jtranslate.dev to attempt to resolve any issues amicably.

Any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of JTranslate that cannot be resolved informally will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the United Kingdom.

Any claim arising out of your use of JTranslate must be filed within one year of the event giving rise to the claim; otherwise, it is waived.

If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid, illegal, or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.

In Short

JTranslate collects information about you to provide and operate the Service. We collect your name and email when you register, and we store your translation projects and files to deliver the translation features you use.

We share your translation data with DeepL to perform translations, and we use Firebase to store your files securely. We don't sell your data to anyone.

We will ask you to provide personal information such as your email address and name on registering, We may send you marketing emails only if you have explicitly opted in. You can withdraw consent at any time.

We make use cookies for authentication and error tracking.

We make use of local storage for improving user experience throughout the app such as remembering the last language you had selected for a given project, remembering your tabs open within the editor, etc.

Data We Collect

Visitors

Like most website operators, JTranslate collects non-personally-identifying information of the sort that web browsers and servers typically make available, such as the browser type, language preference, referring site, and the date and time of each visitor request. JTranslate's purpose in collecting non-personally identifying information is to better understand how JTranslate's visitors use its website.

JTranslate also collects potentially personally-identifying information like Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. JTranslate does not use such information to identify its visitors, however, and does not disclose such information, other than under the same circumstances that it uses and discloses personally-identifying information, as described below. We may also collect and use IP addresses to block users who violated our Terms of Service.

Gathering of Personally-Identifying Information

When you register for JTranslate, we collect:

  • Name (display name)
  • Email address
  • Password (encrypted, stored securely)
  • Authentication method (email/password or Google OAuth)
  • Profile photo (if using Google OAuth)
  • IP address and location data (country, state/province, continent) at signup

Certain visitors to JTranslate's websites choose to interact with JTranslate in ways that require JTranslate to gather personally-identifying information. The amount and type of information that JTranslate gathers depends on the nature of the interaction. JTranslate collects such information only insofar as is necessary or appropriate to fulfill the purpose of the visitor's interaction with JTranslate. JTranslate does not disclose personally-identifying information other than as described below. And visitors can always refuse to supply personally-identifying information, with the caveat that it may prevent them from engaging in certain Service-related activities.

Project and Translation Data

When using the Service, we collect information related to your projects and translations, including:

  • Uploaded JSON files for translation
  • Quick Translations and translation jobs (snapshots of source and target files at a point in time)
  • Project structure and configuration

This data allows us to provide translation services, maintain project history, and enable features like change detection across target languages.

Activity and Audit Logs

JTranslate tracks user activity for security, troubleshooting, and operational purposes, including:

  • Actions within projects (file uploads, updates, deletions)
  • Translation job activity
  • Login and authentication events
  • Account creation and signup information (including IP address and location)

Account and Usage Data

We also collect account-related information to operate the Service, including:

  • Subscription plan and billing information
  • Translation key usage (monthly and all-time)
  • Project count
  • Account status (active, blocked, etc.)
  • Last active timestamp
  • GitHub integration status (if linked)
  • Trial period information
  • Email verification status

IP Address and Location Data

When you register, we collect your IP address and use it to determine your approximate location (country, state/province, continent) using a third-party IP geolocation service. This information is stored with your account and used for security purposes, fraud prevention, and to help us understand our user base. We do not use this information to identify individual users or track your location after signup.

How We Use Your Data

We process your personal and project-related data for the following purposes:

Providing and Operating the Service

To perform translations of your JSON files via Quick Translations and translation jobs. To maintain your projects, including change detection and target language updates. To store and manage your files securely in Firebase. To enable authentication and account access via email/password or Google OAuth.

Billing and Subscriptions

To manage subscription plans, monthly/annual billing, and additional translation key purchases. Payment information is processed via Lemon Squeezy, and JTranslate only stores the minimum necessary information for account management. To send invoices, receipts, and account-related notifications.

Communication and Support

To respond to support requests submitted via hello@jtranslate.dev. To notify users of service updates, technical issues, or changes to Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Marketing and Promotions

We only send marketing emails to users who have explicitly opted in to receive them. During registration, you can choose to receive product updates and marketing emails by checking the optional marketing consent checkbox. Marketing emails are sent via Mailjet, our email marketing provider. We collect only the information necessary to send these communications (primarily your email address). You can opt out of marketing emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in our emails or by contacting hello@jtranslate.dev.

Important for EU users: Marketing consent is never required to use the Service. Consent must be freely given, and you can opt out at any time.

Error Tracking and Analytics

To monitor and improve the Service using Sentry for error tracking and Firebase for operational analytics. To analyze usage patterns, troubleshoot issues, and enhance user experience.

Security and Compliance

To maintain audit logs and track activity within projects. To detect and prevent fraudulent or unauthorized activity using IP address and location data collected at signup. To comply with legal obligations or respond to lawful requests.

Data Sharing & Third-Party Services

To provide the Service, JTranslate shares data with select third-party service providers. Only the data necessary to operate the Service is shared.

Third-Party Providers

  • DeepL – translation processing (JSON files, source and target content)
  • Firebase – backend storage, authentication, and functions (account information, uploaded files, activity logs, IP address and location data)
  • IPGeolocation – IP geolocation service (IP address only, used to determine signup location)
  • Sentry – error tracking & analytics (technical metadata, session information, errors)
  • Lemon Squeezy – payment processing (billing and subscription info, minimal, no full card details stored by JTranslate)
  • Mailjet – marketing emails (email address and marketing preferences only)

Each provider only receives the information required to perform their service. Data is not shared for unrelated purposes or sold to third parties.

International Data Transfers

Data may be processed and stored outside the UK, primarily within the European Union (e.g., Firebase europe-west1). Transfers comply with applicable UK and EU data protection laws.

Data Retention & Storage

Translation Job Files

Translation job files are stored for 90 days in Firebase Storage. After 90 days, the files are automatically deleted. A record of the translation job remains in the database for auditing purposes, but the associated files will no longer be accessible.

Projects

When you delete a project, it is archived for 7 days. During this period, you may contact support to restore the project. If no action is taken, the project and all associated files are permanently deleted after the 7-day archive period.

Audit Logs & Activity Data

Audit logs track actions within projects and translation jobs for security and operational purposes. Logs may persist beyond file deletion to maintain integrity, troubleshooting, and compliance.

Account Data

Personal account information (name, email, authentication data) is retained for as long as your account is active. If you request account deletion, your personal data will be deleted following the procedures outlined in Your Rights, subject to retention of certain records for legal obligations.

Security Measures

All data is stored securely using Firebase storage and encryption. Access to project files and logs is restricted to authorized systems and personnel. Users are encouraged to maintain their own backups of critical files, as no system can guarantee complete protection against accidental loss.

Your Rights

If you are a data subject within the European Economic Area or the UK, you hold specific rights regarding your personal data, including:

Access

The right to view the personal data we hold about you, including account information, project and translation data, and activity logs.

Correction

The right to correct inaccurate or incomplete data. You may request that we correct or update any inaccurate or incomplete personal information.

Deletion

The right to request the deletion of your data. You can request the deletion of your personal data by contacting hello@jtranslate.dev. Deleting your account triggers the retention and deletion policies described in Data Retention & Storage.

Data Portability

The right to receive your data in a structured, commonly used format.

Restriction/Objection

The right to restrict or object to certain processing activities, such as marketing or analytics. Where applicable, you may request that we limit how we process your personal data.

Marketing Preferences

The right to prevent your data from being used for marketing or purposes significantly different from the original collection. You can opt out of marketing emails at any time using the unsubscribe link or by contacting support.

Where processing is based on your consent, you may withdraw it at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before the consent was withdrawn.

Exercising Your Rights

To exercise any of these rights, contact hello@jtranslate.dev with your request. We may require verification of your identity before processing requests to protect your data and privacy. We will respond to all valid requests in accordance with applicable UK and EU privacy laws.

If your data has been processed on behalf of a customer and you wish to exercise your rights, please contact us directly. We'll handle your request in compliance with the law.

For any issues with GDPR compliance, you can lodge a complaint with a European supervisory authority.

Data Security & Safeguards

JTranslate implements technical safeguards to protect your data from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. These include:

  • Encryption of sensitive data in storage and during transmission
  • Secure access controls to Firebase backend and storage
  • Regular monitoring of systems for vulnerabilities and suspicious activity

Access to your data is restricted to authorized personnel only. Staff and contractors are trained on data protection responsibilities. Procedures are in place for detecting, reporting, and responding to data breaches.

Users should protect their account credentials and not share them. Users are encouraged to maintain personal backups of important files. Using strong, unique passwords and updating them regularly helps safeguard your account.

All third-party providers (DeepL, Firebase, Sentry, Lemon Squeezy, Mailjet) implement their own security measures. We only share the minimum data necessary to provide the Service, and we ensure providers adhere to industry-standard security practices.

While we take reasonable measures, no system can be completely secure. JTranslate cannot guarantee absolute protection against all unauthorized access, cyberattacks, or accidental data loss.

Cookies & Local Storage

A cookie is a string of information that a website stores on a visitor's computer, and that the visitor's browser provides to the Service each time the visitor returns. JTranslate uses cookies to help JTranslate identify and track visitors, their usage of JTranslate Service, and their Service access preferences.

JTranslate uses cookies to improve functionality and track errors, including:

  • Sentry cookie – for error tracking and crash reporting
  • Google OAuth cookie – for authentication

Local storage is used to enhance your experience within the app. Examples include storing user interface settings, project navigation state, and other functional preferences. Local storage does not store sensitive personal information beyond what is necessary for app functionality.

JTranslate does not use third-party advertising cookies. Personal information is never sold to advertisers.

JTranslate visitors who do not wish to have cookies placed on their computers should set their browsers to refuse cookies before using JTranslate websites, with the drawback that certain features of JTranslate's websites may not function properly without the aid of cookies.

Business Transfers

If JTranslate, or substantially all of its assets, were acquired, or in the unlikely event that JTranslate goes out of business or enters bankruptcy, user information would be one of the assets that is transferred or acquired by a third party. You acknowledge that such transfers may occur, and that any acquirer of JTranslate may continue to use your personal information as set forth in this policy.

Privacy Policy Changes

Although most changes are likely to be minor, JTranslate may change its Privacy Policy from time to time, and in JTranslate's sole discretion. JTranslate encourages visitors to frequently check this page for any changes to its Privacy Policy.

Users will be notified of material changes via email to their registered account or through notices within the Service. Material changes affect how your data is collected, used, or shared. Minor changes may include clarifications, formatting, or updates to reflect operational changes and may not require direct notification.

Continued use of JTranslate after changes are made constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with the updated Privacy Policy, you should stop using the Service and contact support to delete your account.
